When it comes to equine care, maintaining the health and wellbeing of your horse's legs is paramount. Horses, being active and powerful creatures, depend heavily on their legs for movement, balance, and overall health. Consequently, many equestrians and horse owners invest in various products designed to support the legs and hooves, alleviate discomfort, and enhance performance.
One such product is our EQU StreamZ Horse Bands, a unique and innovative approach to equine therapy. However, using these bands effectively requires careful attention to maintaining cleanliness, especially when turning out your horse.
In this article, we will explore the significance of keeping your horse's legs clean while fitting and using EQU StreamZ Horse Bands, and recommend methods in using the bands effectively on sensitive-skinned horses.
Understanding EQU StreamZ Horse Bands
Before diving into the importance of leg cleanliness, it's essential to understand what EQU StreamZ Horse Bands are and how they function. These bands are a therapeutic device designed to wrap around a horse's leg, providing a non-invasive and drug-free method of supporting equine health. Unlike traditional magnetic therapy, which uses north and south polarity magnets to stimulate blood flow, the EQU StreamZ bands employ a unique 360-degree low-frequency magnetic technology. This innovative approach helps to rebalance the horse's natural bioelectric field - designed to promote better circulation, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pain and discomfort. Bio-resonance therapy in action.
The bands are often used by horse owners to address various issues, including:
- Equine Joint and ligament support: Enhancing joint mobility and reducing stiffness.
- Inflammation reduction: Helping to manage inflammation in horses, swelling (including Windgalls and Edema) and discomfort.
- Injury prevention and recovery: Supporting the natural healing process and preventing future injuries.
- Overall performance improvement: Enhancing a horse's natural abilities by ensuring their legs (and hoofs) are in optimal condition.
Given the importance of the legs in a horse's overall health and performance, using these bands can be a game-changer. However, their effectiveness can be compromised if proper care and cleanliness are not maintained.
The Significance of Clean Legs When Using EQU StreamZ Horse Bands
Whether planning on using EQU StreamZ bands through turn out, or whilst your horse is on box rest - ensuring your horses legs are clean is a vital habit which applies at all times.
1. Prevention of Irritation and Infection
One of the most critical reasons to keep your horse's legs clean when using EQU StreamZ Horse Bands is to prevent irritation and infection. Horses are often exposed to various environmental elements, such as dirt, mud, and debris, especially when turned out. If these contaminants accumulate under the bands, they can cause friction, leading to skin irritation or, worse, an infection. Horses' legs are particularly sensitive, and any small wound or abrasion can quickly escalate if not properly cared for.
The EQU StreamZ bands are designed to be worn for extended periods, making it even more crucial to ensure that the skin underneath remains clean and dry prior to fitting the bands. Any moisture trapped under the bands can create a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to conditions like dermatitis, mud fever, rain rot, or even cellulitis. These conditions can cause significant discomfort for your horse and may require veterinary intervention, which could have been easily avoided with proper cleanliness practices.
2. Promoting Long-Term Use
Regularly cleaning your horse's legs before applying the EQU StreamZ bands is an essential part of a comprehensive leg care routine. By making this a habit, you can help prevent a range of potential issues that could affect your horse's long-term leg health. Consistent cleanliness helps to minimise the risk of skin infections, inflammation, and other conditions that could compromise the health and functionality of your horse's legs.
Additionally, clean legs are easier to detect any signs of injury or abnormalities. When dirt or mud is left unchecked, it can conceal small cuts, swelling, or other issues that may require attention. By keeping the legs clean, you can promptly identify and address any concerns, ensuring that your horse remains healthy and comfortable.
3. Enhancing the Comfort and Wellbeing of Your Horse
Horses are highly sensitive animals, and their comfort directly impacts their overall well-being. A clean and dry leg is far more comfortable for your horse, especially when wearing the EQU StreamZ bands for extended periods. Discomfort caused by dirt, moisture, or irritation can lead to stress and anxiety in horses, affecting their behaviour, performance, and general quality of life.
By prioritising cleanliness, you can ensure that your horse remains comfortable while benefiting from the therapeutic effects of the bands. This, in turn, can contribute to a happier, healthier, and more relaxed horse, both during turnout and when stabled.
‘When’ and ‘when not’ to use the EQU Streamz Bands
EQU StreamZ bands have been developed for 24x7 use, across all seasons. This however does require a level of common sense.
The bands should be worn above the fetlock in soft ground conditions, further still if the ground is soft enough to allow the bands to be fully-submerged then the bands should be removed.
If the horse is ‘turned in’ we advise that the bands are placed below the fetlock (around the pastern); the artery is slightly closer to the outside of the skin under the fetlock joint. As the horse is turned in then full-stride movements are not possible, as such the bands can be placed below the fetlock where movement is limited.
When the horse is ‘turned out’ we advise the bands are placed above the fetlock joint (around the cannon bone). This keeps the bands out of any soft ground and allows the bands to be safely used through extended turned out.
The bands can be used in hot weather (no thermal reaction created by the technology) and in cold, snowy conditions.
Using EQU StreamZ on Sensitive Skinned Horses
As with humans, animals and horses can suffer from contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis may be irritant or allergic in its nature and can effect a small number of horses, particularly sensitive-skinned and white-haired horses.
Irritant reactions can sometimes be detectable on first time of exposure of the bands, normally after a period of 20-30 minutes. The skin will appear slightly inflamed, can feel hot to touch and will often lead to the horse showing signs of discomfort. If you notice this on first Tim use, remove the bands and follow our tips.
While allergic reactions develop in a very small number of horses, this can occur and will normally appear over the first couple of days. Allergic reactions are caused by a reaction of the skin with the webbing of the bands - neoprene. Although non-toxic, neoprene can be sensitive to some horses.
In many cases, horses who react negatively to the bands will often attempt to remove the bands. This can cause irreparable damage to the product and is not covered under warranty.
If you do experience issues with your horses skin, or are aware of historic sensitivity issues, using a few layers of tape can be the solution. Simply wrap a few layers of equine tape (Kinesiology tape or vet rap) around the leg prior to fitting the bands. This prevents the bands material from being in contact with the horses skin.
This can also be beneficial when using the bands with bed shavings and through turnout.
The Role of Bandages or Tape in Maintaining the Bands Through Turnout
Now that we've established the importance of keeping your horse's legs clean when using EQU StreamZ Horse Bands, let's explore how applying a few layers of equine tape or bandages around the leg can help achieve this goal when using the bands through wet and muddy weather.
In the majority of weather conditions EQU StreamZ can be used without the need for additional attention. However, in some cases and with horses looking for 365-day protection, owners need the bands to be left on throughout the autumn and winter months.
Using bandages or tape, either above or below the bands, is a solution.

1. Creating a Barrier Against Dirt and Debris
One of the primary functions of using tape above or below the bands is to create a protective barrier that prevents dirt, mud, and other contaminants from coming into contact with the horse's skin whilst protecting the outer sleeves of the bands.
By applying a few layers of tape around the leg before placing the bands, you can effectively seal off the area, reducing the risk of dirt and debris becoming trapped under the bands. This barrier helps maintain a clean and dry environment under the bands, ensuring that they can function as intended. With sensitive skinned horses, tape will prevent any contact issues between the horses skin an date material of the bands.
When selecting tape for this purpose, it's essential to choose a product that is both durable and breathable. The tape should be strong enough to withstand the rigours of turnout while allowing the skin to breathe and moisture to escape. This prevents the buildup of sweat or condensation under the tape, which could otherwise lead to skin irritation.
Our recommendation is to use a few layers (no more than 5) of vet rap or kinesiology tape.
2. Enhancing Band Stability and Fit
Properly applied tape can also enhance the stability and fit of the EQU StreamZ Horse Bands. When the legs are clean and dry, the bands can be wrapped more securely, reducing the likelihood of them slipping or shifting during movement. The tape provides an additional layer of grip, ensuring that the bands stay in place even during turnout activities. This stability can be highly beneficial for horses who actively gallop and move around their turnout area.
3. Protecting the Bands from Wear and Tear
The tape not only protects the horse's legs but also helps to safeguard the EQU StreamZ bands themselves. Horses often encounter rough terrain, sharp objects, and other hazards during turnout, which can damage the bands. By applying tape around the leg or on top of the bands, you add an extra layer of protection that can shield the bands from direct contact with these potential dangers. This can extend the lifespan of the bands, saving you money and ensuring that your horse continues to benefit from their use over time.
4. Simplifying the Cleaning Process
Using tape can also simplify the process of keeping the bands and your horse's legs clean. After turnout, you can easily remove the tape along with any accumulated dirt, debris, or moisture. This makes it much easier to clean the legs and bands thoroughly before reapplying them. The tape acts as a disposable barrier that takes the brunt of the environmental exposure, leaving the bands and the legs in better condition.
5. Providing Customised Support
In addition to cleanliness, tape can be used to provide customised support to your horse's legs. By applying tape strategically, you can offer additional compression or reinforcement to specific areas that may require extra attention. This can be particularly beneficial for horses recovering from injury or those with particular weak spots. The combination of the tape and the EQU StreamZ bands creates a tailored solution that addresses your horse's unique needs while maintaining optimal cleanliness.
Best Practices for Taping and Cleaning Before using the Bands
To maximise the benefits of using tape with EQU StreamZ Horse Bands, it's essential to follow best practices for both taping and cleaning. Below, we've outlined some key steps to ensure that you are using the tape effectively and maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness.
1. Choosing the Right Tape
Selecting the appropriate tape is crucial for achieving the desired results. The tape should be:
- Durable: It needs to withstand the physical demands of turnout, including movement and exposure to the elements.
- Breathable: The tape should allow air to circulate, preventing moisture buildup and reducing the risk of skin irritation.
- Adhesive: The tape should have a strong adhesive quality to stay in place but not so strong that it causes discomfort or pulls on the hair during removal.
- Flexible: The tape should be flexible enough to move with the horse's leg without restricting movement or causing pressure points.
Many equestrians opt for veterinary-grade adhesive bandages or sports tape (Kinesiology tape) designed specifically for equine use, as these products typically meet the necessary criteria. These would also be the our recommendation.
2. Preparing the Horses Legs
Before applying the tape and bands, it's essential to thoroughly clean and dry your horse's legs. Use a gentle equine shampoo to remove dirt, sweat, and oils, and rinse thoroughly to avoid leaving any residue. After washing, make sure the legs are completely dry, as moisture trapped under the tape can lead to irritation or infection.
Inspect the legs for any cuts, abrasions, or signs of inflammation. If you notice any issues, address them before applying the tape and bands. It may be necessary to consult with a veterinarian if you encounter any significant concerns.
Prior to fitting EQU StreamZ Horse Bands it is important to ensure your horses legs are clean, free from cuts or abrasions and dry.
3. Applying the Tape
When applying the tape, follow these steps:
- Start at the base: Begin by applying the tape vertically (from bottom to top) just above the hoof, taping in a smooth, even layer. Apply tape either vertically or diagonally, avoid applying tape by wrapping around the leg horizontally as this can be counterproductive. Ensure that the tape is snug but not too tight, as excessive pressure can restrict circulation. If using k-tape do not stretch the tape.
- Overlap the layers: As you wrap the tape up and down the leg, slightly overlap each layer to create a continuous barrier. This helps prevent dirt and debris from sneaking in between the layers.
- Cover the area of contact: Focus on covering the areas where the EQU StreamZ bands will be in direct contact with the skin. This is typically around the fetlock and lower leg. Do not use tape if placing the bands under the fetlock and around the pastern.
-
Secure the ends: Once you have wrapped the desired area with a protective barrier of tape, secure the ends of the tape with a firm press. Make sure there are no loose edges that could catch on anything during turnout.
As recommended by an Equine Kinesiologist - "I would recommend that the tape be placed vertically or at the very least diagonally. Both the StreamZ bands and the tape are very good at reducing lymph build up, however, if you tape the limb like a bandage the lymph will have no where to go and circulation in general will be reduced. The tape is also very stretchy/flexible and if you have no experience in using k-tape then you may be tempted to add stretch when fitting. This can be counterproductive when placed over ligaments and tendons, they are very close to the surface and can be damaged." Denise Cheese, UK's leading Equine Kinesiologist.

4. Applying the EQU StreamZ Bands
After taping the legs, you can proceed to apply the EQU StreamZ Horse Bands. Position the bands over the taped area, ensuring that they fit securely and are in the correct location for optimal effectiveness. The bands should be snug but not too tight, allowing for some movement without slipping or spinning around the legs.
Alternatively, if you are looking to protect the bands from getting dirty or chewed then tape can be wrapped over the top of the bands. Turnout Strips are also available which may help prevent your horse removing the bands. (see below)
5. Monitoring and Maintenance
During turnout, it's essential to monitor your horse's legs for any signs of discomfort or issues with the tape or bands. Check periodically to ensure that the tape is still in place and that no dirt or debris has become trapped. After turnout, remove the bands and tape, and inspect the legs for any signs of irritation, swelling, or injury.
Clean the legs thoroughly after each use, and allow them to dry before reapplying the tape and bands. Regular maintenance and monitoring will help you catch any potential problems early, ensuring that your horse remains healthy and comfortable.

When things go wrong
As much as horse owners can prepare and support their horses; in some cases things go wrong.
“Chewing bands” is a topic which our support team naturally become exacerbated with. Whilst we understand the frustration if a horse has damaged the bands, to be told the issue is “our fault” or that the product is “not fit for purpose” is unfair.
Over 40,000 horses around the world already use the bands; the majority of which experience no issues.
The bands above are not defected and are fit for purpose. The image shows a chewed band.
As horse owners ourselves we had horse who would always remove the bands; it was this experience which taught us to use k-tape. We never saw him remove them, but we knew he was! On occasions customers claim their horse “couldn’t possibly remove the bands” and has never done anything similar before. The video below shows an example of a horse being capable of removing and playing with their bands.
Conclusion
Keeping your horse's legs clean when using EQU StreamZ Horse Bands is not just a matter of hygiene—it's an essential part of ensuring the effectiveness and comfort of the bands. By maintaining clean legs, you can prevent irritation and infection, promote long-term leg health, and enhance your horse's overall well-being. Applying a few layers of tape around the leg before turning out your horse adds an extra layer of protection, stability, and support, making it easier to keep the legs and bands clean.
